Book Nerd Blog:  Here’s the Thing about… unattainable goals

Here’s a question for you: we are in the most abundant country, and time, in history. Yet why are so many people never happy?

Why do some many believe that “I’ll be happen when….”.  Isn’t it supposed to be about the journey, and not the destination?  We should know this well, since this oft-repeated quote is plastered all over our social media news feeds!

Why can’t we just accept what is and make the choice to be happy?

My theory’s that we, as a society, are too focused on unattainable goals.  It sucks the joy out of our lives and leaves us feeling like a gerbil on his wheel, forever running and getting nowhere.blog_061517

Here’s two perfect examples of my theory that I’ve experienced.  When I was a teenager, I was a perfect size 7. Never had to try on clothes, if the tag said 7….it would fit.  So, what did I covet way back then?  To be a size 5, of course

Sadly, that wasn’t an isolated moment of teen angst.  Even as a woman in my early 30’s, after I had my baby, I set a goal of losing 40 lbs.  I worked hard and ate well, and ended up losing 39 lbs.  What did I focus on? The terrific, outstanding 39 lbs I lost? Of course not, I was frustrated that I never lost that final 40th pound!

Enough about me, you get the idea.  In fact, you probably have similar stories of your own to tell.  What’s our takeaway here?

Think about the things you’re striving for.  Make sure they’re actually attainable!  Don’t set yourself up to fail.  Remember to have fun along the way, enjoy the process and savor your victories along the way, and above all – don’t sweat it!

After all, life is like a decadent slice of gooey, rich chocolate cake – it’s best when every bite is savored & truly enjoyed.

And, as usual, I’ve got a book for that! If you tend to focus only on the failures in your life, perhaps a paradigm shift is in order. Check out Tavis Smiley’s book Fail Up. His deeply personal tale of some of his life’s failures – and what he learned from them – is an inspiring read.

All for now.  I suddenly have a desire for a slice of chocolate cake…Ok, OK…a small slice….

Until next time, I remain:
